The
first educational ecological path on the island of Cres is called Stoza
Tramuntana I, trod down on the initiative of dr. Goran Sušić,
grew out of the co-operation of the Ecological center Caput
lnsulae - Bell with the association "Svanimir" and
the members of the hiking society "Kastav".
Ecological path was opened in June 24th
1997, on the day of St. John the Baptist. The path is
marked with the known hiking signs red and white circles on the
stones that can be found all along seven kilometres long path. One
can walk the path in approximately three hours of a slow stroll.
There are twenty stations along the path marked by ten major
stations and ten intermediate stops. Major stations and
intermediate stops on the path are actually stone sculptures
carved by well-known Croatian sculptor Mr. Ljubo de Karina. The
sculptures fit into the ambience fully and not in the least do
they disturb natural harmony. They draw attention to the most
valuable natural, cultural and historical sites rounded by the
path. In order to help one to orientate and to find desired
positions in the published guides the major sculptures were marked
by Roman numerals (h, B., 111., IV.,...X) and intermediate stops
were marked by Arabic ones (1., 2., 3., 4.,...10). Besides
numerals, there is a Glagolic letter on each often major
sculptures and these letters designate the name of the path Tramuntana.
Besides that, there are verses or philosophical thoughts by Andro
Vid Mihičić carved on each of twenty sculptures and these words
are placed so very well that their messages respond to the place
where the sculptures are placed. The tour of the path begins by
visiting the exhibitions displayed in the building of the Eco-centre
in Bell. These exhibitions offer to the visitor a complete insight
into the area. One can see a big map of the island's flora with
the characteristics of all vegetation's types, endemic grasslands,
seldom forests as well as get acquainted with the story about the White-headed
vultures
there. The path leads from the building of Eco-centre in Bell
further along klanica (a path from Beli bounded by gromače
- stone made walls) well known for a small, over a thousand years
old church, nowadays used as a stable, to the ruins of tile
medieval church of St. Simeon, which is considered to be built in
the 10th century.
A place where women used to beat and grind wheat can also be found
nearby. The path leads further to the Roman
bridge
(allegedly built over 2000 years ago by the Roman emperor Tiberius)
and it partly runs along the equally old Roman road and through
ancient bitter oak and edible chestnut forests. It taps the Cave
0ampari where 1200 years old remains of a bear were found, it
visits abandoned villages (Srednji, Petrićevi) but it also brings
a visitor to the prehistoric villages and temples (Cerić, Poddupučić).
It runs along freshwater lakes filled with life (Palavanja). One
can observe White-headed vultures from the path, and even
encounter a Macmalić - fair woodland ghostlike dwarf
dwelling on the tree. The path closes a circle. It begins in Bell
and it ends there too. |
